O 104 002 Issues in Death and Dying

This course will address questions such as: How can I help a dying person? What are the end of life issues that come up for the dying and their families? How do I deal with the diverse social and cultural aspects of dying? How do I discuss death with children? What can I learn from the dying? How do different modes of dying (e.g., suicide) affect the grief process? What is the difference between normal grief, complicated grief and clinical depression? How do I take care of myself and avoid compassion fatigue? It will involve PowerPoint presentations, videos, experiential exercises, self-reflections, and readings with the goal of deepening and enhancing one’s understanding of and comfort with death, dying and grieving.
